FAQ

The questions parents ask.

If yours isn't here, ask us. We answer within a day or two.

The class

Does my kid need coding experience?

No. We start from zero every session. Kids who've done it before go deeper, and the groups are built so that works.

What does a class look like?

Ninety minutes on a Tuesday evening. The group builds the week's robot, writes the code that drives it, tests it on the floor, and runs it for the room. Most of the time is hands on; the laptop is a tool, not the activity.

What grades?

Fourth through eighth. Groups mix grades on purpose.

My child is in third grade, or ninth. Can they join?

Not this session. The class is designed for grades 4–8, and the kits and pace fit that range. Email us and we'll let you know if that changes.

What do they take home?

The robots and kits stay with us. What they take home is the code they wrote, what they learned, and a show in week eight that family can come and watch.

Enrolling

How do I enroll?

Through Spotlight Academy, which hosts the class. Every Enroll button on this site takes you there.

What does it cost?

Pricing is on Spotlight's site with the class listing.

What if we miss a week, or need to withdraw?

Spotlight's class policies apply, since enrollment and payment run through them. Ask Spotlight directly for the details, at (704) 545-7373 or through their site.

Can siblings be in the same group?

Yes, if they'd like. Tell us when you enroll or on the first night.

Safety and supervision

Who teaches?

Adam Hunter, a CTO with 20 years in software, and Jenna Hunter, a Spotlight Academy teacher. More about both of us.

How many adults are in the room?

Two, every class, every week.

Where does it meet, and how do pickup and drop-off work?

At Spotlight Academy, 8109 Fairview Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227. Drop off at 6:00 and pick up at 7:30 at the studio drop-off entrance.

The competition team

What is the competition?

LEGO® Education's new robotics competition, launching for the 2027–28 season as the successor to FIRST® LEGO® League. Details on the team page.

When does the team start?

March 2027, meeting weekly to train before the first season opens.

How do we sign up?

Join the interest list. We'll email when there are dates and a cost.

Does my kid have to take the class or a workshop to join the team?

No. The team is open to any 4th through 8th grader, whether or not they've taken the class or a workshop. Both are good preparation, but neither is required. Sign up on the interest list either way.

Demo days and workshops

What happens at a demo day?

You and your kid drop in, drive a robot, see what a class builds, and ask us anything. It's free and there is nothing to sign up for.

What is a workshop?

A one-day session: one robot, one challenge, start to finish. It's a paid event registered through Spotlight, and a good way to try the format before an eight-week commitment.

Do we need to do a workshop before the class?

No. Both are optional. The class starts from zero, and neither one is required to join the competition team.
